DISPLACEMENT

In 2010 with the title (DISPLACEMENT).

This installation was an exploration on the theme of displacement and what it means to feel that you belong in one place and yet find yourself in another, where choice about where you settle cause you to feel adrift and pulled in different directions. A sense of displacement can occur be it geographically, emotionally or circumstantial. By utilising recycled fabrics and the knitting process i embarked on an exploratory journey which through dismantling and reassembling alludes to a transformation and relocation from one place to another. Intact and yet changed. The Knitting process also honours craft traditions which to this day are practiced in many communities throughout the world. I attempt to fuse these traditions with more contemporary shapes and in doing so forge a connection between myself and my ancestral craft roots. As a symbolic representation I used jellyfish, as by their very nature while having some control, are at the mercy of tides and weather systems.
